Words Their Way
How you can help with spelling at home:
The intention of this program is to look at spelling and word patterns in a different way. Students will practice their word sorts in class and learn the word patterns in class. Spelling test will be every 2 weeks. AT HOME you can spend 10-15 minute, 3 to 4 times a week practicing their spelling list. Picking one activity a night to do.
Here is a sample of what your week might look like:
Monday (new list comes home) - cut and sort words
Tuesday - sort words and then pick 10 to do rainbow writing
Wednesday - speed sort and choose 10 words to put in ABC order
Thursday - sort words and do practice spelling test with 15 words
Monday - blind sort
Tuesday - speed sort and do scribble spelling (learned in class)
Wednesday - speed sort and pick 10 words to write 4 ways (crayon, pencil, pen and marker - learned in class)
Thursday (day before spelling test) - do a practice test with all words
Spelling City - online game to practice words.
ANSWER KEY - the number of the sort is in the top left corner of the page.
Practice your spelling words using rainbow writing. Pick 10 words, roll a dice and write the word in the correct color. A fun and colorful way to practice spelling words!
Try a SCRIBBLE sort! Have your child draw a loopy picture and in each space pick 1 word to practice as many times as possible. A fun way to mix art and spelling.
